Answers

1. Do I have to take the IT Proficiency Test for my graduation?

All degree students are required to take and pass the IT Proficiency Test for graduation EXCEPT the following students:

  • HSMC Pre-AD and AD graduates who have passed the COM001 Information Technology Fundamentals or COM101 Introduction to Information Technology
  • Students / graduates who passed COM2004 Introduction to Information Technology

2. How to pass the IT Proficiency Test?

Students have to pass all topics (7 in total) in the IT Proficiency Test. To pass a topic, students have to score at least 50% of that topic in the corresponding test.

3. How many topics are there in the IT Proficiency Test?

The IT Proficiency Test covers the following topics:

  1. Computer hardware & software
  2. Network & the Internet
  3. Internet Security
  4. Word Processing
  5. Spreadsheet
  6. Presentation Software
  7. Computer Ethics and Copyrights

4. Do I have to attend these two compulsory workshops – “Internet Security” and “Computer Ethics and Copyrights”?

If you are degree students admitted after 2012-2013 and if you are NOT exempted from attending the IT Proficiency Test, you are required to attend these two compulsory workshops before graduation.

5. What if I failed the IT Proficiency Test?

You have to retake the test until you get a pass, but be aware that you only have 2 chances to take the test for free.  After that you have to pay an administration fee of $200 for each attempt.

Please note that even if you have passed the IT Proficiency Test on your 3rd or later attempt, before your administrative fee is successfully deposited to Hang Seng Management College account, the status of your IT Proficiency Test will not be changed to “Passed”. In other words, only after you have passed the IT Proficiency Test and successfully paid the corresponding administration fee, will the procedure of changing your IT Proficiency Test status, which normally take some working days, begin.

6. What if I was absent from the IT Proficiency Test?

An administration fee of $200 will not be waived if you were absent from the IT Proficiency Test.  You need to settle the fee before you can register another IT Proficiency Test or IT workshop, so it is important that you remember to attend the enrolled IT Proficiency Test on time.

7. I am worried that I cannot pass the IT Proficiency Test, what can I do?

You are recommended to enroll in IT workshops for the topics that you are not confident in. Or, you can download and study the materials of those topics before the IT Proficiency Test.

8. Do I need to pay for the IT workshops?

There is no fee for workshops held on MOOC, while there is an administration fee of $200 for each IT workshop held physically (in classrooms or computer labs).  The fee is waived unless you are absent from an enrolled workshop, so it is important that you remember to attend the enrolled IT workshop on time.

9. Can I complete the IT workshops online?

Currently we have two workshops, 7. Internet Security and 8. Computer Ethics and Copyrights, available on MOOC.  Students can complete these two workshops online through MOOC by enrolling the workshops, viewing the materials and completing the exercise at the end of each workshop.  Once students have completed the two workshops online, they have fulfilled their HSMC IT requirement for graduation of degree students.

10. Are there any specific requirements for me to complete the IT workshops online?

The following lists the two requirements for students to complete the IT workshops online.

  1. You MUST use your HSMC account to enroll the workshops, otherwise your attendance will not be recorded.
  2. You MUST finish the exercise at the end of the workshops, otherwise you are not regarded as completing the workshops.

11. Once I have completed the IT workshops online, when will my attendance record be updated?

Attendance record is updated monthly.

12. Do I need to submit a deposit for each IT workshop I have enrolled in?

No, you do not need to submit a deposit for each enrolled IT workshop.  You only need to pay a $200 administration fee if you are absent from an enrolled workshop.

13. How can I pay the imposed administration fee for the absented IT workshops or IT Proficiency Test?

If you are absent from an enrolled IT workshop or IT Proficiency Test, or you have failed the IT Proficiency Test for two times and you are attempting the test again, the $200 administration fee will not be waived.  You will receive a debit note for the fee, and you shall settle the fee according to the payment instructions listed on the debit note.

16. Why is my enrollment rejected?

One of the reasons is that the IT workshop(s) / IT Proficiency Test is/are full before you have finished your registration procedure. The rejection may also be due to the cancellation of IT workshop(s) / IT Proficiency Test under a low enrollment rate. If you are rejected owing to the last reason, our centre will notify you through email.

17. If my enrolled IT Proficiency Test or IT workshop is cancelled, will it be rescheduled?

If your enrolled IT Proficiency Test or IT Workshop is cancelled because of low enrollment, bad weather, or other unforeseeable reasons, it will not be rescheduled.  If you would like to attend the test or the workshop again, you can enroll in it through eRegistration.
